Governor Murphy Establishes State Artificial Intelligence Task Force

Governor Phil Murphy has established the State Artificial Intelligence Task Force, which aims to study and analyze the emerging field of artificial intelligence (AI). With New Jersey’s reputation as a hub for innovation, this Task Force will ensure that the state’s use of AI is fair, accessible, and beneficial to all New Jerseyans. The Task Force will consist of Co-Chairs from various government offices and include members from diverse backgrounds such as education, labor, and security.
The Task Force will collaborate with industry leaders, academic experts, consumer advocates, and government innovators to develop recommendations for the ethical use of AI technologies. Additionally, Governor Murphy is committed to educating the state workforce about AI and its potential risks. The New Jersey Office of Innovation, in partnership with InnovateUS, will launch a free AI training program for state workers.
To further support the use of AI technologies across the state, various state agencies and departments will have specific responsibilities. The Economic Development Authority will explore ways to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance training and talent development using AI. The Office of the Secretary of Higher Education will review AI technologies as a research opportunity for New Jersey colleges and universities. The Office of Information Technology will develop policies and strategies for the use of AI in government services and support executive branch departments and agencies in responsibly deploying AI technologies.
The Task Force will convene as soon as possible and prepare a report with their findings and recommendations within 12 months. The report will be made available to the Legislature and the public, ensuring transparency and accountability.
